Title of the research : What Architects Don’t Know: A Survey to Identify and Understand Architectural Quality Within the Profession

under the supervision of Dr.Jean-Pierre Chupin

Abstract : What can an architect truly know about a spatial experience that he has not yet had? To design is to hypothesize about a future experience. The architect anticipates uses, perceptions, and spatial qualities. However, he will not be able to experience them until the building is constructed and occupied. Between this imagined space and the lived space, there is an element of the unknown: something that the project cannot fully foresee and that only contact with reality can reveal.
Drawing on post-occupancy evaluation methods and studies of award-winning buildings, this research will bring architects from different generations face-to-face with spaces they did not design. The goal will be to analyze what they perceive, name, and describe during this experience, as well as what remains hidden. Ultimately, this dissertation aims to understand how the perception of architectural quality is constructed, transmitted, and represented.
